YMCA fitness area reopened on Monday

The YMCA reopened on Monday, giving people the opportunity to get back to working out.

“I’m excited like everyone else to be able to open up the YMCA,” YMCA Chief Executive Officer Stuart Parker said. “Many people have missed the opportunity to workout, and now the timeline has been set.”

Starting on May 20, the fitness center hours are 4 a.m. until midnight everyday. The office hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The part of the YMCA that is open is for fitness, and the YMCA is allowing 25 percent capacity.

The fitness center is open and fitness classes are back. The basketball court is not open for playing basketball.

In the fitness center, only every other cardio machine is allowed to be used in the interest of social distancing. Also, those doing other types of workouts have to social distance, staying six feet apart.

YMCA Program director Toni St. Philip said that the machines are being wiped down several times a day and they are fogging the machines when they close at night.

Brandi Beaudette’s exercise classes return on Wednesday, May 20.

“We’re beyond excited not only to get back ourselves, but for everybody else,” Beaudette said. “Everybody has been cooped up. They’ve been winging their workouts. To get back in that group setting, have that camaraderie and the challenge of being next to somebody is what we’re looking forward to, being able to push each other.”

Classes take place in the basketball gym and participants must be 10 feet apart during the classes.

No weights will be allowed on the basketball court and  everybody has to bring their own yoga mat.

Classes are free for members and the drop in fee is $10. The first class is free.

Circuit training takes place Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. and Friday at 6 p.m.

Yoga is being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m.

Step is set for Wednesdays and Fridays at 5:15 p.m.

Those entering the YMCA must sign papers to reactivate their cards. They will then clock-in with their cards to go workout. They must also fill out waivers and safety guidelines that show what the YMCA is doing to provide for its members’ health.

In other YMCA news, St. Philip said they are hoping to restart their meal program next week.

Also, the YMCA has been posting virtual classes for their Art Program and their Growing Green Program on their Facebook page. Search Bogalusa YMCA to find their Facebook Page.

Every other cardio machine is available for use in the interest of social distancing. When doing other types of exercises, social distancing is required.
